Exploring Food: A Great Way to Get Kids to Eat Their Vegetables

by Joanie

The vegetable with dinner last night was steamed sugar snap peas with red peppers.  Neither of my boys (ages 1 and 4) was willing to give them a try till we decided to explore them first.

When I grabbed my fork and opened one both children were in awe that the pod housed little green balls.  To my amazement they both quickly gobbled down every single one.  Of course, I had to open every pod, but they ate more peas than I thought possible!

We took this opportunity to have an enjoyable family discussion on what purpose the pod and peas serve in nature and how it helps them to reproduce.

In all, having fun and exploring our food has proven to be a great way to get my kids to eat their veggies.  How about you?  What tips and tricks do you have for luring your kids into eating real food?
